StopOrDrive

Enter a 5-character code such as P0420, P0301, or P0457.

We don't have that code yet

Codes starting with P are engine and transmission, B are body, C are chassis, and U are network communication. A 0 as the second character means a generic code shared by all makes; a 1 means a manufacturer-specific code, so its meaning depends on your brand.

A steady check engine light usually means get it checked soon. A flashing check engine light means an active misfire: reduce speed and stop driving as soon as it is safe.

That doesn't look like an OBD-II code

A valid code is one letter (P, B, C, or U) followed by four characters, for example P0420.

P0456 EVAP system very small leak detected

Can I drive with P0456?

Drive

Safe to keep driving normally. Fix it when convenient.

It only affects fuel-vapor emissions, not how the engine runs. There is usually no symptom or smell, but the light stays on until the leak is fixed, which matters if your state requires an emissions inspection.

What does P0456 mean?

The fuel vapor system found a very small leak, often from a seal that has aged. The engine computer seals the system and watches its pressure, usually after the car is parked, so it can detect a hole as small as 0.02 inch across.

What causes P0456?

A worn gas cap seal is the most common cause. Other tiny leaks are hard to see, so a smoke test usually finds them.

  1. Worn gas cap seal
  2. Tiny crack in an EVAP hose
  3. Purge or vent valve not sealing fully
  4. Leaking fuel filler neck

How much does it cost to fix P0456?

$0 – $500

Gas cap: $15–$60. Smoke test to locate the leak: $100–$150. Valves: $150–$400. Replace an old or cracked cap first, since it is cheap and often the fix. The light can take several days to go off, because the leak test runs only under certain conditions.

What are the symptoms of P0456, and how can I confirm it?

Usually none, not even a fuel smell. Check that the gas cap clicks when tightened and its rubber seal is not cracked or flattened. Then look for split hoses near the charcoal canister and the filler neck. P0455 and P0442 come from the same leak test and point to larger leaks.

Will P0456 fail an emissions test, and should I clear it?

It fails any OBD-II based inspection while the light is on. After replacing the cap or fixing a leak, clear the code or just keep driving; the light often turns off by itself after several days. If P0456 returns, have a shop smoke test the system.

Confirm the code yourself

A low-cost scanner lets you read the code, clear it, and see if it comes back before paying for a diagnosis.
