P0300 Random or multiple cylinder misfire detected
Can I drive with P0300?
Drive soon
OK to drive for now, but get it fixed within days to a couple of weeks, or the damage and the bill can grow.
With a steady light, drive gently straight to a shop. Several cylinders misfiring at once points to a problem shared by the whole engine.
If your check engine light is flashing, treat this as Stop now: an active misfire dumps unburned fuel into the exhaust and can destroy the catalytic converter within miles.
What does P0300 mean?
More than one cylinder, or no single cylinder consistently, is failing to burn its fuel. Expect shaking, rough idle, or weak acceleration. The engine computer spots misfires from tiny changes in crankshaft speed and sets this code when they are spread across cylinders.
What causes P0300?
Because the misfire is not tied to one cylinder, look for something the cylinders share. Old spark plugs and vacuum leaks are the usual suspects.
- Worn spark plugs
- Faulty ignition coils
- Vacuum leak
- Low fuel pressure or dirty injectors
- Low engine compression from internal wear
How much does it cost to fix P0300?
$100 – $1,500
Spark plugs: $100–$300. Coils: $150–$450. Vacuum leak: $50–$300. Internal engine repairs cost far more. Fix misfires quickly: unburned fuel can overheat the catalytic converter, which costs far more to replace than plugs or coils. If plugs and coils check out, a shop can test fuel pressure and compression.
What are the symptoms of P0300, and how can I confirm it?
Expect a rough or shaking idle, hesitation, weak power, and sometimes a raw-fuel smell. A scan tool with per-cylinder misfire counts shows whether the misfire moves around. Check spark plug age, coils and connectors, and listen for vacuum leaks. P0301 to P0306 often appear too and point to the worst cylinders.
Will P0300 fail an emissions test, and should I clear it?
It fails any OBD-II based inspection while the light is on. Clear it only after a repair, and only if the light was steady, then drive normally for a few days. If P0300 or a cylinder code returns, the cause is still there. Never keep driving with a flashing light.
Confirm the code yourself
A low-cost scanner lets you read the code, clear it, and see if it comes back before paying for a diagnosis.
