Enter a 5-character code such as P0420, P0301, or P0457.

We don't have that code yet

Codes starting with P are engine and transmission, B are body, C are chassis, and U are network communication. A 0 as the second character means a generic code shared by all makes; a 1 means a manufacturer-specific code, so its meaning depends on your brand.

A steady check engine light usually means get it checked soon. A flashing check engine light means an active misfire: reduce speed and stop driving as soon as it is safe.

That doesn't look like an OBD-II code

A valid code is one letter (P, B, C, or U) followed by four characters, for example P0420.

P0011 Intake camshaft timing over-advanced or performance (Bank 1)

Can I drive with P0011?

Drive soon

OK to drive for now, but get it fixed within days to a couple of weeks, or the damage and the bill can grow.

The engine may run rough, and ignoring it lets a timing problem get worse and more expensive.

What does P0011 mean?

The intake camshaft on bank 1 is more advanced than the engine computer commanded, so the variable valve timing system is not responding correctly. The system uses oil pressure to turn the camshaft, so oil level and condition matter. Bank 1 is the side with cylinder 1.

What causes P0011?

Oil problems cause most cases, so check the level, condition, and viscosity first. A sticking VVT solenoid is the next most common.

  1. Low or dirty engine oil
  2. Faulty variable valve timing (oil control) solenoid
  3. Wrong oil viscosity
  4. Worn timing chain or tensioner
  5. Faulty camshaft phaser

How much does it cost to fix P0011?

$50 – $2,500

Oil change: $50–$120. VVT solenoid: $150–$450. Timing chain job: $1,000–$2,500. Change the oil using the viscosity on the oil cap or in the owner's manual before buying parts, then clear the code and see whether it returns.

What are the symptoms of P0011, and how can I confirm it?

Rough idle, stalling, hesitation, and worse fuel economy are common, and some engines rattle at startup. Check the dipstick for low or sludgy oil. On a scan tool, compare the desired and actual cam angle. If P0014 or P0016 appear too, suspect oil supply or timing chain wear rather than one solenoid.

Will P0011 fail an emissions test, and should I clear it?

It fails any OBD-II based inspection while the light is on. After an oil change or solenoid replacement, clear the code and drive normally for a few days. If P0011 returns, the cam phaser or timing chain likely needs attention, and waiting only makes that repair bigger.

Confirm the code yourself

A low-cost scanner lets you read the code, clear it, and see if it comes back before paying for a diagnosis.
